Overview
Ethena is a protocol built on Ethereum whose core product is the synthetic dollar USDe. Unlike fiat-reserve-backed stablecoins, USDe is not backed by dollars or short-term treasuries in a bank account; instead it uses crypto assets as collateral, paired with derivatives positions to maintain a value of roughly US$1. This design is called delta-neutral hedging: the protocol holds long spot positions in staked crypto assets (such as stETH and BTC) while opening equivalent short perpetual positions, so that collateral price swings are offset by the hedge. Ethena officially positions USDe as a "synthetic dollar" rather than a stablecoin. ENA is the protocol's governance token.
Staking USDe yields sUSDe (staked USDe) and generates returns from two sources: staking yield on the collateral (e.g. ETH staking rewards) and the perpetual funding rate on the hedge. sUSDe's yield is not a fixed rate and fluctuates with market conditions: per CoinDesk (Feb 2024), its first-week average annualized yield was around 27%; per coinpaprika (Sep 2026), it exceeded 60% at launch before falling to around 4% by August 2026. When the funding rate turns negative, yield can fall to zero or even go negative.
Core Features
- USDe synthetic dollar and delta-neutral hedging: Collateralized mainly by ETH liquid staking tokens (such as stETH) and BTC, with equivalent-notional short perpetuals opened on CEXs, so long spot and short derivatives form a delta-neutral position (essentially a basis trade / cash-and-carry). Per official documents, when delta-neutral, its USD-denominated value is in theory unaffected by collateral spot price movements.
- Off-Exchange Settlement (OES) custody: Collateral is not placed directly on exchanges but held via OES, with partners including Copper, Ceffu (MirrorX), and Cobo (SuperLoop); funds move between custodian and exchange only when settling funding or realized P&L, reducing exposure to a single exchange's failure. Ethena also lists this as "Custodial Risk."
- Yield sources and sUSDe: Holding USDe does not automatically generate yield; it must be staked into sUSDe. Yield = collateral staking yield + perpetual funding rate. Returns are higher in bull markets with positive funding rates, but drop sharply or go negative in bear markets with negative rates; a sufficiently prolonged negative rate could deplete the Reserve Fund and trigger a redemption wave.
- ENA governance and ecosystem: ENA holders can govern matters such as risk-management parameters and ecosystem expansion. Ethena also launched USDtb (backed mainly by money-market-fund / short-term assets, with positioning distinct from USDe). From August 2026, it proposed governance to buy back ENA with net protocol revenue and adjusted investor unlock arrangements.
Main Uses
- Governance voting: ENA holders can participate in Ethena protocol governance on major decisions.
- Protocol parameter governance: Risk management, collateral and hedging-strategy parameters, ecosystem expansion direction, etc.
- Staking ENA: Stake to participate in ecosystem programs and reward mechanisms.
- Ecosystem incentives: Used for Rewards Campaigns, cross-chain programs, and exchange partnerships.
- Mechanism linked to protocol revenue (governance-proposal stage): In August 2026, the Ethena Foundation proposed a fee switch to buy back ENA with net protocol revenue; if passed and trigger conditions are met, part of protocol revenue would be directed to ENA buybacks (as of writing, this is at the governance-proposal / condition-trigger stage, not an established fact).

Important Risk Disclosures
- Negative funding rate risk: One core source of sUSDe yield is the perpetual funding rate; when the market turns bearish and rates go negative, Ethena's shorts must pay instead of receive, and yield can fall to zero or go negative. A sufficiently deep and prolonged negative rate could erode the reserve fund and even principal, triggering mass redemptions. Yield is variable, not guaranteed.
- USDe de-peg risk and collateral/hedge imbalance: USDe's ~US$1 value relies on continuous matching of collateral spot and short positions; in extreme markets, liquidity droughts, when exchanges cannot absorb sufficient shorts, or when the basis widens, delta-neutrality can break down and USDe may de-peg. USDe is a synthetic dollar, not a traditional 1:1 fiat-reserve-backed stablecoin.
- CEX and custody/OES counterparty risk: Hedging shorts are opened on centralized exchanges, with collateral held by OES/custodians such as Copper, Ceffu, and Cobo. Ethena explicitly lists this as "Custodial Risk"; the protocol depends on the operations, solvency, and performance of exchanges and custodians, and any counterparty failure, freeze, or default could affect position safety and USDe backing.
- ENA large unlocks, supply dilution, and holding concentration: With a max supply of 15 billion, a substantial portion remains uncirculated; team and investor unlock schedules, and the one-time unlock of remaining investor tokens on October 5, 2026, could bring dilution and sell pressure. Holding concentration is high — per CoinGecko, a single entity, StablecoinX, holds about 20.19% of supply, which could amplify volatility when sold.
- Smart contract and liquidation risk: The protocol relies on smart contracts, with risks of code vulnerabilities, attacks, or oracle failures; collateral and hedge positions may also face liquidation or an inability to rebalance in time during extreme markets.
- High price volatility: ENA is highly volatile, with the current price around −86.6% from its all-time high and a negative one-year return.
